The Primary Care Physician Assistant Program at USC is dedicated to the advancement of physician assistant education and emphasizes service to the medically underserved. The program is committed to preparing students from diverse backgrounds to practice medicine with physician supervision. Emphasis is placed upon understanding and appreciating diversity. The program aims to prepare its graduates to practice and promote primary health care of the highest quality as part of an interprofessional team.

Before every medical disorders and treatment exam, students participate in "Wrap Up" activities. These activies allow students to...
Students are assigned five to eight disorders to learn and be prepared to be the resident "expert" during wrap up. Students are then placed in groups with students who were all assigned different objectives. The activities completed in the small groups during wrap up challenge each student to identify the objectives they were assigned and teach their group what they learned while preparing for class. These activities only work to reinforce what students were taught while in lecture and help them prepare for the upcoming exam.
Wrap up works to focus students on what they will be testable material, but is also a fun hands-on activity that brings learning out of the lecture format. Students become the teachers and reinforce what they reviewed before class by explaining the material to others.
One wrap up activity that is a student favorite is for the Infectious Disease exam. Students prepare one page drawings that represent the disease they were assigned.
USC recognizes that many of its students will be working locally in the Los Angeles area after graduation. This means that many of their patients will be Spanish-speakers only. To ensure students will be able to communicate with their future patients, USC has implimented a Medical Spanish class where it strives to close this gap between providers and their patients.
Students are taught how to take a medical history, walk a patient through a physical exam, and explain their medical assessment and treatment plan all in Spanish. To ensure students have gained an adequate understanding of Medical Spanish to conduct a proficent patient visit, students complete a exam that consists of a mock patient encounter completely in Spanish.
Multiple rotations that USC offers students require students to utilize their Spanish when meeting patients. Students also practice their Spanish during student health fairs, where many of the patients only speak Spanish. This works to reinforce the students' proficiency in Spanish and prepare them for their future patients after graduation.
Students also have fun while learning Spanish in creative ways. Acting out Spanish skits is one of the few ways students learn to express their creativity in class.
